Many of us have witnessed a happy little hamster, enjoying those laps around the wheel, with no real knowledge of how she got there or why. So blissful and so ignorant. Now by ignorant I don’t mean intentional rejection of information; I simply mean lack of information. She seems to have gotten somewhere and seems to be happy, but what is not as straightforward is why she would go there and why she would be automatically happy there.
While there are many common ways people spin their wheels without experiencing the bliss they assume will come, I’d like to focus on a form of hamster-like ignorance that’s often considered to be bliss by Christians. One that echoes into eternity: those with innocent ignorance of the salvation Jesus offers. While some consider those lacking knowledge of the gospel to be destined for hell, others consider such unintentional ignorance to result in salvation to heavenly bliss. If God or humans don’t bring Jesus to you here, perhaps you automatically are brought to heaven when you die.
Is gospel ignorance greatest bliss? Do the unreached get a free pass to heaven (or hell)? Why would they go there? Are they perfect? Do they need Jesus? Do others need Jesus then? Is this fair or just? Why would they be automatically happy there? Do they all want heaven? Do they have a choice? Once the wheels in our minds start moving, and especially once we review the biblical input on these questions, such ignorant bliss becomes far less straightforward. Turns out God’s spin on hamster heaven makes a lot more sense, is equally applicable to everyone, and makes sure we’re with him in bliss because that’s where we want to be (Click to tweet).
